This Reality

a moment caught in a blink
the image, the lingering after-image
etched on the inside of my eyelid in negative relief
Which reality do I follow?

the one laid out before me
the one perceived when the lights go down
this shadowed landscape that flashes faster than perception
as the light finishes its relativistic trip through the retina

then slows down to nerve impulse level
a mere spark through an electrochemical medium
looming large for an instant
showing the glowing lines of light’s reflection, refraction

As perception rules reality, reality bends for a blink
Then I breathe and take a step
into the brand new world
created in that instant

darkness chased away
gentle fingers of my lashes no longer tangled
my eyes unfettered
I face the new day created a thousand times

to be destroyed again
